This is for a science experiment.

So for example I record a guitar playing A at 440 Hz at home
and play that back from a speaker into another microphone hooked up to the computer,

how would the frequency differ from if I were to record directly into the microphone?
does it depend on the speaker/microphone? Is there a general rule of increased/decreased frequency?

Thanks for your help and 10 pts to the most helpful answer.

What YahooUser said.

Remember, the purpose of recording equipment usually is to faithfully reproduce sounds. If you record the guitar, and play it back, it would ideally sound just like the guitar. If you record the recording and play that back, it would ideally sound just like the first recording… just like the guitar.

YahooUser talked about distortion, but there’s something much more significant that will happen if you copy a recording by playing it back through a speaker, and re-recording with another mic in a room. The mic won’t just hear sounds that come directly from the speaker, it will also hear sounds that reflect off the walls and the ceiling and the floor. Every room has its own “ambiance,” and that will be added to your second generation recording. If you repeat the process several times, your nth generation recording will start to sound like the guitar was played in a giant echo chamber.

Also, every speaker and every microphone has a unique “frequency response”, which is to say, it emphasizes certain frequencies and deemphasizes others. Unless your speakers and mic have four-figure price tags, the emphasis/deemphasis can be quite significant. You talked about playing an “A 440″ on your guitar. But from a signal analysis point of view, even a single guitar note is actually the sum of sine waves of many different frequencies. When you record that through a mic, and play it through a speaker, even if there’s no harmonic distortion, it’s still the case that some of those frequencies will be boosted, and others will be cut, resulting in a sound that can have a noticeably different “quality” or “timbre” from the original.

————————–

I was thinking of trying the violin or maybe a ukulele. Any suggestions? or do all instruments require really differnt skills in order to play them?

In the order that you asked.
Any instrument that requires finger dexterity would be interesting. The concept behind violin and other bow instruments would be easy enough to learn but the technique required to play bowed instruments well, takes a few years to master.
As for the ukulele check this out:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=N_QNrGvdFIU
I suggest to all musicians, at some point learn the basics of piano.
Yes, each instrument requires different skills that are unique to that particular instrument, although many skills can crossover to many instruments.
The bottom-line is that each instrument has a particular voice and although you may have the physical skills and ability to make a sound on an instrument, bringing out the instruments particular voice always requires that you invest a bit of time and practice on that instrument.
Finally, I suggest once again that you learn some piano. Even if you don’t study it seriously it will be a big help to your overall edification and musical understanding.

i am kind of on a limited budget, but i have been looking at package with an AKG C1000S and a Perception 200 condenser mic along with headphones, two XLR cables, and mic stands.
thats all fine and good, but here is where i get lost. audio interface? phantom power? preamps?
i would like to be able to mix guitar tracks, backup vocals, and the like. and i would prefer to spend under $1000 for at least this first basic setup.
please, i am really quite clueless about all this, so the more specific and step-by-step the answers, all the more helpful.
thank you in advance.

Go to http://www.tweakheadz.com
Tons of great information.
The shure sm57 mic is the industry standard for a lot of vocals and instruments. I have a couple and they live up to their good reputation. (not sure about piano) Most professional condensor mics dont require internal batteries or individual AC power supplies in order to work. Instead they are designed to be powered directly from the console through phantom power supply. Phantom power works by supplying a positive DV voltage through both conductors of a balanced mic line to the condensor capsule and impedance preamp. The output signals of most mics have levels too low to drive input stage of most recording systems, so mic preamps are used to boost its signal to the appropriate levels .
A few different types of interfaces. Like, PCI, USB, and Firewire.
Basically you need this to run your software. Here are a few http://www.zzounds.com/cat–2418

I’ve bought an 8-track recorder and now need to find a mic – I’m looking for something that will pick up classical guitar and various acoustic instruments e.g. clarinet, saxophone and give them a warm sound, not too tinny or with too much hiss. Ideally for under £100. It’s for getting ideas down rather than for making final recordings, so doesn’t need to be wonderful, but it needs to be clear. I’ve looked on a lot of websites but most seem to be for professionals and recommend mics that cost the earth. Just something basic and reliable that won’t break the bank would be good!

Well, I don’t have much experience with recording acoustic, but I’ve recorded electric before and the only mic I’ve ever used is the Shure KSM27 SL Professional microphone. Shure is basically the top of the food chain when it comes to microphones. They make the best on the market and even there lower cost models work amazingly. The KSM27 SL is a professional microphone and it runs around $200, not sure what the exchange would be in pounds. If that’s a little too pricey, then you can go a step down and get the Shure SM57-LC microphone. I’ve heard this mic has amazing quality for the price. It runs around $70. I found some reviews at my favorite review site on each of them to help you out.

Shure KSM27 SL: http://www.viewpoints.com/Shure-KSM27-SL-Co-Professional-Microphone-reviews

Shure SM57-LC: http://www.viewpoints.com/Shure-SM57-LC-Professional-Microphone-reviews

Hope that helps!

there is a program called garageband on mac computers which have cameras built in and you can use real life instruments with microphones hooked up to the mac so it knows what notes your playing or you can use the instruments on the program and if you mess up you can just place the note on the right note on the grid.
