if your looking for acoustic guitar specifically, i would definitely suggest a pickup, they go underneath the strings and record a far higher quality sound than a normal mic, it also means the guitar doesnt have to be sat in front of a microphone and can be moved without the sound diminishing.

Not really sure about an average quality mic? know some good high quality ones but yeh?
References :
Well, I don't have much experience with recording acoustic, but I've recorded electric before and the only mic I've ever used is the Shure KSM27 SL Professional microphone. Shure is basically the top of the food chain when it comes to microphones. They make the best on the market and even there lower cost models work amazingly. The KSM27 SL is a professional microphone and it runs around $200, not sure what the exchange would be in pounds. If that's a little too pricey, then you can go a step down and get the Shure SM57-LC microphone. I've heard this mic has amazing quality for the price. It runs around $70. I found some reviews at my favorite review site on each of them to help you out.

Hope that helps!
References :
www.viewpoints.com
